Engineering :Food For Thought

Every year, lakhs of people in India pass out after an unique experience called engineering How many of them are technically adept? It wouldn't be fair to comment on other colleges but from personal experience i can tell you that 80% of the engineers that pass out from my college are technically gauche to join the industry.Hard to believe? I thought so too, when some people told me,before entering college.Well you might think that he's one of those useless students(which is true)but the fact is that even the so called "good" students don't know much more than me.

Most of us curse the system(which i agree is far from perfect).Let me brief you about everything that is wrong in the system. The value given to practicals is 1/4 of that given to theory. This is very hard to understand when you think that engineering is more about practical knowledge than theoretical. The standard of teaching is pathetic(it really is!).There are few students who make it on their own.Through natural ability or sheer determination. This percentage,as I've mentioned earlier,of students is very small. These are things I've been hearing since i joined college.

Introspection leads me to a flip side.I've never made an effort to study on my own.Labs are available 24*7.The senior faculty is always supportive of people who do projects. There are technical fests where one can showcase their talent. There's a library which has the best of books. There's an internet connection available which is the largest source of data. There are seniors who are always willing to help juniors who take the effort.Lastly, there is an abundance of time. The most common excuse is "I don't have interest in it"(mine too) but a fact remains. Three years have rolled on and i still haven't given engineering a chance.

We keep blaming the system.Whom are we fooling but ourselves??

  1. dude u probably shud give a thot at the whole situation in a broad minded way.. lemme start..
see- ppl do engg cos theyr pushed in2 it.. or cos they get good marks or to make some money.. very few have a genuine interest in the subject..
just imagine bro... im sure the situation is the same in medical colleges too.. these fucked up doctors pass out not knowin nething abt medical.. n then eventually dey are the ones who we go to lookin for a cure to our illnesses..
i mean.. just imagine man.. u sit an airplane an the pilot says il TRY to take off.. its the same situation in all the fields nowadays.. ppl study what they think will get em money o sumn like dat.. not what theyr actually meant to do or genuinely have a passion for.. im tellin u if every1 follows their dream this world will be a better place to live in..
lets hope for a better future.. a future free from all the ignorance of conditioning and one which blossoms ion love..

    love n peace out..

  3. Hey.....both o you'll got valid points....kunal i agree that d world would be a better place if everyone cud follow their dreams...some people are lucky that they know what they want to do from a very early age..but then at the age of 17 the majority of us are not mature enough to know what we really want....and that's when we go into a fields where there's money....4 eg in the States they choose they're major subject much later...Though they're education system is also screwed up in many ways but i like the idea of selecting you'r major subject at the age of 20 or so...

  4. are we not giving eng. a chance ?... no wer not ... wer prejudiced ... why prejudiced ? il get to that later ... we(atleast me) have been on an extended vacation ever since the 12th got over ... 3 yrs rolled by and yea we did crap ... i bet u dont even remember how a damn capacitor or an inductor works fundamentally ... chuck that ... now the prejudiced part ... for the last 3 yrs iv been cursing the damn system the same way u have, aiming just to clear the course in the minimum 4 yrs not seeing the point in trying to score ... ask me why ... cuz i just want the degree and i wanna go do MBA(i have no idea bout its basics but hell it pays, just like the guy above said) ... are my eng. scores gonna play a big part in getting me into that perfect MBA uni ??? to a certain extent yes ... but id still take my chances and avoid 'struggling' to score in these 4 yrs, live a good life(which we bloody are) and then deal with all the requirements for MBA later ... at the end of the day i see myself as a 'manager' rather than a 'technical assistant' coz obviously it pays better ... so yes i am wasting 4 yrs just getting more a degree than knowledge n marks(because i didnt put in any effort) but after i get into my postgraduation everythings gonna change(fingers crossed) ... out goes the laid back attitude, bitching the system, carelessness fr marks, countless more excuses, blah blah blah ... in comes the seriousness, maturity, competitiveness and the desire/passion to succeed ... coz thats the period of thats gonna define the next 5 yrs n then the rest of ur life ... for me its MBA ... for someone else it could be masters ... pretty much the same thing ... the level of competition in our country is so bloody big that anyone can be an engineer ... its wat comes after that which counts ... so big deal i took a vacation for these 4 yrs ... do i regret it ? yes i pretty much do ... can i do anything bout it ? na just damage control in this final year ... as i said ... its the next step that counts ... the next degree , the next phase ... ironically itl be just like going back to school

  5. Well faculty plays an important role and look here in NIT Jalandhar what sort of mentors we got?? Its not the case with every1 that they feel motivated from inside, they need some1 to guide them and help them to follow their dreams.Teachers here themselves need to learn more about the basics before teaching us.They got such a parochial approach. God save us!!
Lets look in the situation from the positive side. I dont think these four years were that bad..We got many things to learn here(One of biggest the lessons is that Things dont come by themselves, One needs to work hard to realize one's dreams. only u can help urself , nobody else can) Who knows what might be the situation had we been doing something else.
So lets just put behind the past and try not repeat the mistake again and to work hard this time in future.
